Joanna is a young girl whom the CWOI team met during our time in Kenya. A pastor in her village told us that Joanna’s mum had taken her out of school at the age of about 10 because she could no longer afford to pay her school fees. Consequently, she ended up in a couple’s home as a maid, not knowing that she had landed in the wrong hands. Her employer raped her repeatedly, leading to pregnancy. Upon realising that she was pregnant, the couple threw her out of their house, and poor Joanna had no option but to give birth at the tender age of 12. When our team met Joanna, her baby was 7 months old, but she could not hide her desire to go back to school. What was even more surprising, was the fact that it would cost as little as £30 per month and £90 per term to send her back to school.
